Huskies look to close year on winning note
October 30, 1992
The soccer team will wrap up its 1992 season Sunday (1 p.m.) with a home match against Mid-Continent Conference opponent Cleveland State.
The 6-9-1 Huskies will try to defeat the Vikings for the third time in as many matches. The Vikings are in the midst of a horrible season at 2-13-1 with a 1-4 conference record, including consecutive losses to Illinois-Chicago and Wisconsin-Green Bay last week.
Two years ago in DeKalb, the two teams were tied at two after regulation. The Huskies came out roaring in the overtime period with three goals to pull out the 5-2 victory.
In last season’s matchup, the first period started out to be a shootout. CSU opened up with a goal less than three minutes into the match. NIU’s Jay Konrad countered with one of his own, only to see the Huskies fall behind four minutes later.
Five minutes after NIU tied the match, Andy Lane found the net for the match winner. The last 57 minutes were played scoreless.
The Vikings are led by Andy Oldknow with 14 points on four goals and six assists, followed by Kevin Sipsock with 12—five goals and two assists.
The NIU leading scorer is senior Dave Weichman with 15 points on seven goals and an assist. Six of Weichman’s goals have come on penalty kicks. He is followed by Lane and Nathan Mitchell with seven points apiece.
A victory on Sunday would bring several positives to this otherwise disappointing season. With a victory, NIU would finish with a winning home record (4-3-0) and a winning conference record (4-3-0).
It would bring not only a winning league record, but a chance to finish second in the Mid-Con. A Huskie victory coupled with a pair of losses by Wright State and Illinois-Chicago would put all three teams at 4-3 and create a tie for second behind conference leader Wisconsin-Green Bay.
In the same token, a Huskie loss along with a pair of Cleveland State victories would place the two teams in a tie for sixth at 3-4.
The Huskies are riding a four-match winning streak, including three conference matches and are going to do all they can to avoid sitting down at the bottom of the conference and do their best to send off seniors Weichman, Todd Moore and Craig Williams with a victory.
