Huskies declaw Cats 3-1

By Mark D. Morrey

Willy Roy’s career record against Northwestern improved to 6-0 Wednesday as the NIU soccer team defeated the Wildcats 3-1 in Evanston.

The Huskies outplayed the hosts all afternoon and must have gained back some of the confidence they had lost all season long. The three goals scored were the highest number totaled this year.

NU’s Jason Alexander opened the scoring four minutes into the match to end NIU’s shutout streak against Northwestern at just over 325 minutes. Alexander now leads the Wildcats in scoring with 12 points.

Back with a vengeance was Huskie tri-captain Dave Weichman. Weichman sat out the Marquette match on Saturday with an ankle injury sustained during last week’s Wisconsin victory but came back strong as he scored two goals.

The first coming 16 minutes into the match on a penalty kick to tie the game and the second coming with just over a minute remaining to seal the match up for good.

Weichman wasn’t sure if he was going to be able to play but thankfully, he did. The pair of goals now gives him seven for the year for 14 points, and he leads the team in both categories.

The winning goal was scored by sophomore Tim “Billy” Prerost with just over nine minutes to play in the match. The goal was Prerost’s first of the season.

NIU is now 3-8-1 on the season while NU falls to 3-8 after its home finale.

“I thought we had a good team effort and that’s what it takes for us to win,” NIU coach Willy Roy said. “We had a lot of people contribute to that team effort.”

NIU outshot Northwestern 20-12 on the way to its first road win of the season. Jeff McCall was in the net for the Huskies making five saves and improving his record this season to 3-4-1.

For a second straight match, the Huskies had to deal with the rain and a wet playing surface.

Wednesday’s victory will put the Huskies in a position to make a move in the Mid-Continent Conference race. Of NIU’s five remaining matches, four are against conference foes. NIU has also won two of its last three.

On Friday, the Huskies will travel to Valparaiso University, which NIU has never lost to (6-0 career record), followed by a home match against Wright State. Wright State defeated the Huskies last season and are 3-1 in conference play this year. The Huskies are 0-3. Three of the last five matches are at NIU.
