DeKALB — This year’s 2020 general election has seen more voters cast their ballot in DeKalb County than any other general election in previous years, with mail-in ballots still being counted. 

In DeKalb County, a total of 63,841 people were registered to vote, and, as of Wednesday, 47,982 people voted in the 2020 general election, according to the DeKalb election website. This is a 75% voter turnout compared to the 2016 general election which had a 71% voter turnout. 

The Holmes Student Center also saw an increase in ballots cast at the location this year. In the 2016 general election, 1,511 people voted at the location and 1,626 voters cast their ballot in 2020, according to a Nov. 10 Freedom of Information Act document obtained by the Northern Star. 

The Barsema Alumni and Visitor’s Center saw fewer voters this year compared to 2016. Only 845 voters cast their ballot at the center in 2020 while 1,238 voters showed up in 2016, according to FOIA documents. 

As of Tuesday, the DeKalb County Clerk’s office has received 14,430 mail-in ballots. Of those mail-in ballots, 165 have been rejected due to signature issues or having no signature at all, according to FOIA documents. 

The 2020 election in DeKalb County had a higher voter turnout than any other general election since 2002, as data from the DeKalb election website only dates back that far.
