Last week in sports 11/9 through 11/15

DeKALB — Whether it was more than five college football games being canceled, Dustin Johnson winning the Masters, or the Arizona Cardinals winning at the last second, this week in sports was eventful.  

 

NCAA Football

In college football, the University of Cincinnati, Liberty University, Coastal Carolina University, Marshall University, and Brigham Young University are all undefeated as non Power Five conference teams. 

The ninth-ranked University of Miami beat Virginia Tech University and the second-ranked University of Notre Dame defeated Boston College to beat out the upsets.

The sixth-ranked University of Florida defeated the University of Arkansas, which had their old quarterback, redshirt senior Felipe Franks, and the 13th-ranked University of Wisconsin blew out the University of Michigan, which ties the biggest loss at “The Big House” in Michigan in history. 

There were multiple football games cancelled this last week including Ohio State University, the University of Georgia, and the top team in the country, the University of Alabama. All those games were cancelled due to a rise in positive COVID-19 cases. 

 

Mid American Conference

This week in the MAC, there were three games on Tuesday and three games on Wednesday. On Tuesday, Ohio University defeated the University of Akron, Kent State University defeated Bowling Green State University, and the University at Buffalo blew out the University of Miami–Ohio. 

On Wednesday, Ball State University defeated Eastern Michigan University, Western Michigan University defeated the University of Toledo on a fake spike, and Central Michigan University defeated the Huskies in DeKalb. 

At the moment, Buffalo is at the top of the MAC after the second week of MAC play at 2-0. 

 

NFL

This past week on Thursday Night Football, the Indianapolis Colts blew out the Tennessee Titans with quarterback Phillip Rivers throwing over 300 passing yards.

On Sunday, the New York Giants defeated the Philadelphia Eagles in another big battle of NFC East teams. Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is now undefeated as a starter for the Miami Dolphins as they defeated the Los Angeles Chargers. The Pittsburgh Steelers defeated the Cincinnati Bengals to remain undefeated, and the Arizona Cardinals beat the Buffalo Bills on a game-winning Hail Mary touchdown grab by wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins with one second remaining. 

On Sunday Night Football, quarterback Cam Newton and the New England Patriots defeated the Baltimore Ravens led by quarterback Lamar Jackson. Running back Damien Harris had over one hundred yards rushing in the game. 

 

Masters

Dustin Johnson recorded his second major tournament win on Sunday with a five stroke win at the Masters. He ended up hitting 15 under par. This is one of the biggest blowout wins in Masters history.

Tiger Woods, the defending Masters champion, hit one under par at the end of the tournament. 

 

NBA

There are rumors that a trade could be developing between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Oklahoma City Thunder. The Thunder would receive Danny Green and a 2020 first round draft pick while the Lakers would receive Dennis Schroeder.

 

NFL

This upcoming week in the NFL, the Thursday Night Football game puts the Cardinals and the Seattle Seahawks together to play an important NFC West game. 

Some of the big games on Sunday are the Titans facing the Ravens, the Dolphins playing the Denver Broncos, and the Green Bay Packers facing the Colts. 

On Sunday Night Football, the Kansas City Chiefs will play the Oakland Raiders in a rematch where the Raiders won earlier in the season.

 

NCAA

There are a lot of major games in the NCAA this upcoming week. The ninth-ranked University of Indiana will play the third-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes. 

Wisconsin will play Northwestern University in a game of top-25 Big Ten conference teams. Top-ranked Alabama will play the University of Kentucky.

Oklahoma State University will play the University of Oklahoma in a rivalry game and the University of Southern California will play the University of Utah. 

 

MAC

For the MAC, on Tuesday, the game between Ohio and Miami was cancelled. 

At 6 p.m. Wednesday, the Huskies are playing Ball State on the road on ESPN News. Also, a battle of two undefeated teams puts Western Michigan and Central Michigan together. 

 

NBA Draft

The NBA draft is Wednesday night. It features star players like LaMelo Ball from Illawarra Hawks of Australia, Anthony Edwards from Georgia and James Wiseman from the University of Memphis. 

The Minnesota Timberwolves will get the number one pick in the draft. They will be followed by the Golden State Warriors and the Charlotte Hornets to round out the top three picks, barring any trades.

The Chicago Bulls will be the fourth pick in the draft. They’ve been linked to Maccabi Fox Tel Aviv’s Deni Avdija.
