SA fills seats, discusses attorney contracts

The Student Association held its second meeting of the fall semester yesterday, and hammered out several important issues.

Four vacant senator seats were filled at the meeting. The newly appointed senators are Jeff Carl, Jen Manning, Joe Delphin and Ivaldo Vasso.

The new senators were chosen from the list of write-ins. Each came from districts which already had eight senators, but the list of write-ins for the districts with open seats was exhausted.

Also discussed was the proposed Shared Governance contract. The proposed contract would offer attorneys contracted by the SA to work in the Student’s Legal Assistance Office with benefits paid for by the NIU administration.

It would also upgrade the attorneys from being individually contracted to university employees.

University Counsel George Shur assured the senate the attorneys working on the university’s payroll would not affect which clients they work for because of legal ethics.

SA President Paul Middleton said the SA would like to make the jobs of the current attorneys more marketable. “When the time comes that either Don Henderson or Lynn Richards decide to retire … we hope the position will be attractive.”

Anna Bicanic, SA public relations adviser, said Henderson and Richards currently pay for their own benefits. “Don Henderson is a graduate of Harvard University and he doesn’t receive benefits. We don’t think that is fair considering the amount of work they both do,” she said.

Minority Relations Adviser Sandra Penner mentioned there will be a walkout on Oct. 12, sponsored by Latino and Native American organizations. The walkout will protest the celebration of the quincentennial of Columbus’ discovery of America.

Penner said students are encouraged to leave class at 1:15 p.m. to converge at the King Memorial Commons where a protest will be held.

In other business, the SA approved Mikki Anderson as the new mass transit adviser, replacing Christi Kret, who resigned after the end of the summer semester, but stayed with the SAMTB to help usher in her replacement.

The senate also discussed a proposed Presidents’ meeting. A tentative date was set for the meeting, which will be held with SA staff and executives and presidents of other campus organizations.

Two goals had been set for the meeting, which include discussing the SA’s goals and integrating them into the goals of the organizations, and taking suggestions on how the SA could help the organizations and how the organizations can help bring the SA back to the students.

Jordan Kagan, voter registration chair, discussed the voter registration drive. The SA has registered about 3,000 people and will have its registration table open from 9:00 a.m. to midnight today.
