Janae Poisson wins MAC Sixth Player of the Year

DeKALB — The 2020-21 Mid-American Conference Women’s Basketball Postseason awards were announced Tuesday and NIU had two players honored. 

Redshirt junior guard Janae Poisson and sophomore guard Chelby Koker received recognition after helping NIU to a 10-8 record in the MAC.

Poisson was named the MAC Sixth Player of the Year and Koker was named to the All-MAC Second Team. Koker and Poisson had a major impact on NIU’s success being two of NIU’s most productive players throughout the season.

Koker led the team in scoring, averaging 21 points per game, while Poisson ranks third on the team averaging 9.2 points per game off the bench. Poisson also led the MAC in 3-point percentage after making 46.5% of 135 attempts on the season.

For Koker, she led the MAC in free throw percentage after making 88.9% of her 135 attempts from the free throw line. 

This is the first time Poisson and Koker have been honored with a MAC Postseason award.

NIU’s next game is 3 p.m. Wednesday against the Central Michigan University Chippewas in the first round of the MAC Tournament. That game will be held in Cleveland, Ohio, at the Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse and is available on ESPN+.
