DeKALB —Men’s soccer saw a heroic performance from junior forward Nick Markanich during a huge win against the University of Southern Illinois- Edwardsville Wednesday, 2-0.

The Huskies, coming into this game on a two-game losing streak, needed a win desperately and got a huge offensive performance where they bombarded the SIUE goalkeeper and punched in two goals.

The first goal, scored in the 44th minute, was crossed 15 yards out from the goal by junior midfielder Adrian Corona where it was finished off by Markanich.

The second goal was scored in the 49th minute, and was sent high by redshirt senior Irvin Dominguez behind the defense where Markanich was waiting. He went one-on-one with the defender, then slotted the ball into the lower right corner of the net, giving the Huskies a two-goal lead early in the second half.

The Huskie defense played well, allowing only one shot on goal the entire game. The defense was led by defenders junior Anthony Markanich, first-year Harry Jolley, sophomore Adrian Lara and first-year Malcolm Ward.

The Huskies offense bombarded redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Luis Martorell with six shots on goal in the game.

This is the first win for the Huskies against the Cougars in three years, ending a three-game losing streak.

With only four games remaining in the season, the Huskies improved their record to 4-5-1 overall and 3-3 in Mid-American Conference play. They are ranked second place in the MAC late in the season.

The Huskies return to the pitch noon Sunday in Akron, Ohio, against the University of Akron Zips. Kick-off is at FirstEnergy Stadium. The game can be streamed on ESPN+.
