NIU ready for season-ending tourney
September 29, 1992
One last time in 1992.
The NIU women’s golf team will wrap up the fall campaign at home this weekend. The Oak Club of Genoa will provide the backdrop for the 8th Annual Huskie Classic on Friday and Saturday.
The 6,281-yard, par-72 course is home to the Classic for the fourth year in a row. The Classic, however, was not played in 1991 due to continuous rainfall. NIU tied with Illinois State for first in 1990, and the Huskies won it outright in 1989.
ISU is one of many teams NIU coach Pam Tyska feels has a chance to grab some hardware.
“ISU, Kansas State, Iowa State and NIU will be there,” Tyska said. “As far as our week goes in preparation there will be no qualifying round this week, and we will practice on Tuesday and Wednesday as a team and then hold a practice round with all the participating teams on Thursday.”
Other teams invited include Northeast Missouri State, Northwestern, Ferris State, University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, University of Indianapolis and Bradley.
NIU is coming off of a fourth-place finish at the Lady Cyclone Invitational in Ames, Iowa. Senior Jen Hall had her best showing of the fall with a tie for 11th in the individual standings.
Sophomore Shelly Wendells leads the team with the lowest stroke average at 81.2. Senior ace Kim Hodge is still doubtful to return to the lineup following a severe ankle sprain she suffered two weeks ago on her way to practice at the Lady Northern Invitational in Iowa City, Iowa.
This is the final competitive golf the ladies will face for quite some time. After the Huskie Classic, the ladies can practice for one more week and play on their own, but they will not return to the links as a team until early February. That may give the Huskies some added incentive to win this weekend.
“We are going to regroup and aim to win our tournament,” Tyska said. “At least we know what we are up against. We’ve seen the contending teams, and we know what we have to do to beat them. If we stay mentally focused, we have a chance to be at the top.”
