DeKalb Public Library to host virtual budget workshop

DeKALB — End Financial Literacy Month with the DeKalb Public Library and its “Simplify Your Spending and Saving Strategies” event. The virtual workshop will take place from 5:30-7 p.m. Wednesday via Zoom, and aims to help those participating balance their budget.

The workshop is going to help teach people how to set personal financial goals, balance their saving and spending, how and when to borrow money to help achieve one’s goals as well as provide tips to help improve their credit scores, said Samantha Hathaway, public relations and event manager at the DeKalb Public Library.

This event will be the final workshop as a part of DeKalb County’s “Smart Money” initiative, a plan that works to bring together and share information and resources on personal finance topics, according to the initiative’s details page

“The whole purpose (of the smart money initiative) is to give people more information about how to handle their finances and help them out with things like retirement, home buying and selling and improving their credit score,” Hathaway said.

The initiative is a mass-partnership between Dekalb County, the Library and other partners such as Kishwaukee United Way, The NIU Center for Economic Education, Country Financial and The Girl Scouts of America, to name a few.

The organization presenting “Simplify Your Spending and Saving Strategies” will be financial services company Edward Jones, hosted by Heather Hilleshiem, a financial advisor with the company.
