Lacrosse club racks up two more wins

The NIU lacrosse club played three games in two days last weekend and came out of it with a 2-1 record.
On Saturday, the team traveled to Chicago and lost 7-6 to a men’s club team from Lincoln Park. The weather conditions and Lincoln Park’s experience hurt the Huskies.
“It was sloppy and muddy out there,” said NIU midfielder and club secretary Joe Curtis. “Some of the corners of the field had puddles which made it difficult to pick up the ball. They had great stick skills and are very experienced since most of the guys played in college.”
Mike Klappenbach led the Huskies’ attack on Saturday with two goals. Tim Becker, Rich Fantozzi, Dave Rask and Curtis each tallied one in a losing effort.
On Sunday, NIU hosted a club team from the University of Iowa and Forest City, a Rockford-based club team comprised of many NIU alumni. NIU downed Iowa 10-5 and slipped past Forest City 10-9 in double overtime.
In the Iowa game, the Huskies struggled in the beginning but opened up the attack in the second and third periods, which enabled NIU to get new players valuable experience late in the game.
Once again the scoring was led by Klappenbach as he registered four goals. Curtis and Mark McGrath tallied twice and Rask and Fantozzi scored once.
The team had a 30-minute break and then took on Rockford. The Huskies took a two-goal lead into the fourth, but Rockford tied it and sent it into overtime. The teams played a scoreless overtime period and headed into a second overtime where Curtis nailed the game winner.
“We had some stupid penalties that put us in man-down situations that they capitalized on,” said Curtis, whose game-winner gave him three on the day.
Becker added three goals, Rask had two, Fantozzi and Will Ralph each netted once.
The club now has a few days to prepare for its 5th Annual Fall Classic on Saturday and Sunday. The Huskies battle the University of Kansas in the first match on Saturday at 10 a.m.
