Team USA finalized its roster Monday for the 2021 Solheim Cup, Sept. 4-6 at Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio. The Americans are looking to win back the cup after a 2019 defeat at Gleneagles in Scottland. 

Team USA’s roster will feature Nelly Korda, the current No. 1 women’s player in the world and reigning Olympic Gold Medalist. Korda’s older sister, six-time LPGA winner, Jessica Korda and two-time Solheim Cup teammate Daniel Kang will also anchor the American team.

The American team will need to rely not only on veterans to perform but also first and second-time competitors if they hope to win back the Cup on home soil. Here are three players that will need to bring their A-game at Inverness to lift Team USA past the finish line.

Nelly Korda

Nelly is the number one player in the world and currently is in the conversation for LPGA player of the year. The 23-year-old is making her second appearance in the team event after being on the losing side her first go around. In 2019, Nelly secured 3.5 points with a match record of 3-0-1 over the three-day event. 

Nelly leads the LPGA in scoring average with a 69.020, almost a half-shot better than second-place. 2021 has been a career-making year for Nelly; she claimed her first major championship at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship in June. She also has won two other LPGA Tour Events and claimed the Gold Medal at the Olympics in Tokyo back in July. 

With her older sister Jessica also on the team, expect to see the siblings partnered up throughout the team format sessions.

Danielle Kang

Kang is making her third appearance in the Solheim Cup, qualifying for her third consecutive team. The 2017 KPMG Women’s PGA champion is looking to find her competitive spark back in the United States. 

With an overall record of 4-4-0 in her career on the team, Kang looks to bounce back from a 1-3-0 record in the 2019 contest. She is currently winless on the LPGA season and missed the cut at Carnoustie for the AIG Women’s Open Championship. The 28-year-old is 13th in scoring average and 31st in birdies made on the LPGA Tour this season. Like Nelly Korda, Kang ranks inside the top five in par-4 scoring on Tour.

Inverness has 13 par-4s on the scorecard. Kang’s ability to attack these holes will prove vital in matches coming down the stretch.

Megan Khang

Khang is returning after a disappointing debut in 2019, going 0-2-1 at Gleneagles. Khang dropped both of her foursome matches before halving her singles match against Europe’s Charley Hull. 

While the 23-year-old is still searching for her first win, Khang has performed well under pressure, recording three top-10 finishes in the majors since 2020. Khang’s strength, though, should prevail in the partner events. Khang ranks sixth on the LPGA in fairways found off the tee.
