Women’s tennis shine in Warhawk Fall Invitational

DeKALB – The Northern Illinois women’s tennis team took home three singles titles and doubles crowns during the 2021 Fall Warhawk Invitational. 

Sophomore Diana Lukyanova won the No. 1 singles draw winning all three of her matches, with a 6-2, 6-0 set victory over Lewis senior Anastasyia Salenko. 

Freshman Reagan Welch fell to Salenko in her second match, and took third place at No. 1 singles with 6-3, 6-3 win over Lewis freshmen Nefeli Zafeiri. 

Sophomore Anastasia Rakita received the No. 3 singles, winning all four sets after defeating Cardinal Strich Sophomore Noor Goyvaerts, 6-2, 6- and UW-Whitewater Freshman Gianna Nikoleit, 6-2, 6-2 in the championship match. 

Senior Christy Robinson sweeped all six of her sets, to receive her crown at No. 4 singles. She won her first match, 6-1, 6-1, before defeating Carlton Junior Lingyu Wei, 6-0, 6-1. Robinson scored a 6-0, 6-3 win over UW-Whitewater Senior Olivia Kraft in the title match. 

Freshman Erika Dimitriev finished fourth at No. 2 singles to round out the Huskies’ top performers in singles play. 

In the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles championship on Friday, NIU seized control. Dimitriev and Rakita teamed up at No. 1 doubles and defeated teammates Lukyanova and Welch, 6-3 in the championship match. 

Seniors Fernanda Naves and Iuliia Dmetrieva went 3-0 in doubles action defeating Robinson and redshirt senior Gabriella Kaminski in the title match. Naves and Dmetrieva won 7-5 in the title match over their teammates. 

The Huskies will return to action Friday Oct. 29, when NIU hosts three schools for the Huskie Indoor Invitational.
