What I’m watching this weekend: Northern Star Staff
The weekend is almost here which means it’s time to take a break and have some time to yourself to relax. From action to comedy, check out what some of the staff at the Northern Star are planning to watch this weekend.
Black Widow (Disney+)
“Black Widow” is a Marvel Studios film starring Scarlett Johansson, Florence Pugh and David Harbour. The film was released last summer and is available to stream on Disney+.
The film follows Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow, played by Scarlett Johansson, as she reunites with her sister Yelena Belova, played by Florence Pugh. “Black Widow” is entertaining to watch, even if you aren’t a Marvel fan. – Madelaine Vikse, Lifestyle Editor
The Office (Peacock)
“The Office” is a popular classic that will always be relevant. The show follows the staff at the fictional Dunder Mifflin Paper Company and stars Steve Carell as Michael Scott, the company’s offbeat and outgoing branch manager.
This show is fun to watch or to have on in the background and is something you can enjoy while working, without having to rewind. – Madelaine Vikse, Lifestyle Editor
Cobra Kai (Netflix)
“Cobra Kai” is a television series based on the original “Karate Kid” movie from 1984 where many of the actors come back to start their own dojos. This is a comedy-drama that features martial arts used for good and evil.
Ralph Macchio runs Miyagi Do, William Zabka runs Eagle Fang and Martin Kove runs Cobra Kai. The teenagers that go to these three dojos get so wrapped up in their fighting knowledge that they turn against each other and want to fight even outside of the dojo settings. – Elisa Reamer, News Editor
Free Guy (Apple Tv, Amazon Prime, Vudu, YouTube)
Ryan Reynolds is the main character of the comedic movie, “Free Guy.” The movie is based off a video game and Reynolds’ character, Guy, is supposed to be a non-playable character but a love interest in the games makes him come alive.
The film is a must see and even has a part for Marvel fans during the movie. The purpose is to follow the different types of characters, including people playing the game and the non-playable characters, who are built into the game code. Everyone tries to figure out who this “blue shirt Guy” really is and how he is able to do so much if no one is playing him in real life. Even those who do not play action-packed video games will enjoy this movie because it will keep them laughing. – Elisa Reamer, News Editor
Varsity Blues (Hulu, HBO Max)
A coming-of-age sports dramedy released in 1999, “Varsity Blues” stars James Van Der Beek as Jonathan “Mox” Moxon, the bright yet defiant backup quarterback for a fictional Texas high school football team. He is co-starred by Jon Voight and the late Paul Walker.
The film follows the lives of Moxon and his teammates as they navigate the trials of their teenage years whilst avoiding the consistent wrath of tyrannical, winning-obsessed head coach Bud Kilmer (Voight). – Skyler Kisellus, Sports Editor
