There are many different ways to organize clothing and it can be extremely beneficial to have your clothing set up in a way that makes sense to you. Here are tips and suggestions on what can be done to make your closet one of your favorite spaces.

Clothes

Most clothing items can be hung, but what should be hung? Depending on the space you have in your closet, you could hang pants and tops. To prevent wrinkles, shirts should always be folded. If space is available and it is convenient, you could also hang jeans by the belt loop with hooks.

“Shirts should be hung up, coats should be hung up; I fold my jeans and pants but I actually hang my shoes with an over-the-door shoe rack,” said Rebecca Formeller, a senior theater design technology major.

When organizing folded clothes, it is important to take note of what you have in comparison to the storage you have for your clothing. During the winter it can be beneficial to have a drawer for gloves, hats and any other cold-weather accessories you may need. If you go to the gym often, you could put any gym pants, sports bras or socks in one specific space. Another great idea would be to separate jeans and other pants from shorts. This way you can have a drawer for warm-weather items and one for cold-weather items.

Accessories and shoes

Necklaces and belts can be put into a drawer or jewelry box, but one of the best ways to optimize drawer space is to use command hooks to hang these items. Shoes can be organized in a variety of ways. If you have a lot of shoes, you can use the shelf above your hanging clothes to hold your most often worn shoes and switch them out as the weather changes throughout the year. Formeller said that a great space-saving option would be to get an over-the-door shoe rack.

Other tips

There are many differences of opinion on how to organize your closet.

“I color coordinate the clothes that I hang and organize them from shortest to longest sleeve length,” said Alexis Rodriguez, a junior health science major.

Formeller said that there are also specific materials that are more prone to wrinkles including satin, cotton and linen. The best way to prevent these materials from wrinkling is to hang them.

“Put things where you’re going to use them,” Formeller said. “I hang things up with the thickest clothing on the outside and the thinnest clothing on the inside and from the longest clothing to the shortest clothing.”

The best thing to keep in mind when organizing your closet is yourself and your daily routine. Does that routine change when you are not in school? How might that affect what clothes you wear or how you get ready? There is no right or wrong way to organize your closet, but having a system that works best for you is a game-changer.
