Every morning, I open Twitter only to see updates on the current drama with Kanye West and Kim Kardashian.

The replies to the Twitter updates are full of memes and snarky remarks — nothing less should be expected of Twitter users.

However, the memes and snarky remarks downplay the gravity of the situation. Kanye West’s behavior is dangerous and scary, and it’s not something to joke about.

Most of the drama stems from Kim and Kanye’s upcoming divorce as well as her relationship with Pete Davidson.

Kanye West has a history of bad behavior and public outbursts, likely stemming from his struggles with bipolar disorder.

Regardless of his mental struggles, he is continually antagonizing Kim and those close to her. Despite the Twitter memes, it’s not funny. It’s abusive.

Just this month, Kanye has publicly attacked Kim for allowing their first child, North, to post on TikTok, as well as making a post praying to God to bring their family back together.

Kanye has gotten Kim’s new phone number from third parties and aired private text messages from her. He’s also started instigating fights with Pete Davidson and Kid Cudi over social media.

Kanye’s attempts at reconciling with Kim are dangerous. He’s stalked her, openly love-bombed her and tried to manipulate and guilt-trip her by airing text messages she had asked him to keep private.

This is far from just celebrity drama. It’s literally domestic violence.

Nearly 30% of all adult women in the US have been in domestically violent relationships, in which partners will stalk or physically harm them.

Arguably, Kim Kardashian has the resources — both financial and legal — to get out of the relationship and heal from the trauma of domestic violence.

Most other women do not have those resources and often end up trapped in abusive relationships.

Continuing to support Kanye after displaying such abusive tendencies towards those around him only reinforces the cycle of abuse. If it’s okay for Kanye to do it to Kim, then it signals that it’s okay for other men to do it to women, too.

It’s not OK, though. Kanye should be held accountable for his actions toward Kim.

To do that, his fans need to call out his behavior for what it is without using his mental health problems or the actions of those around him as an excuse.

Kanye’s behavior isn’t funny. It’s scary, and the blatant dismissal of Kim’s feelings sets a dangerous precedent for women in abusive relationships.

Instead of laughing at Kanye, support Kim.
