The women’s golf team partook in their second event of the spring competition schedule Monday and Tuesday. NIU finished 10th out of 12 teams at 90-over-par at The Gold Rush in Seal Beach, California.
NIU’s competition at the two-day event included the 14th and 15th ranked teams amongst Division I schools in the University of Southern California and the University of California at Los Angeles.
How it happened
A cluster of bogeys saw NIU add to its stroke count early, recording 19-over-par after the top nine of Monday’s first round. The Huskies closed out the first round at 34-over-par to take 10th place. The lowest scorer of the round was sophomore Jasmine Ly at six-over, followed by freshman Jóhanna Lúðvíksdóttir at seven-over.
The second round proved to have a more successful opening half for the Huskies, who hit 15-over-par on the first nine holes. NIU closed out Monday with a team score of 35-over in the second round. Senior Sofia Gomez Enriquez had the best single performance of all Huskies in the lineup Monday, hitting two-over-par in the second round.
The Huskies finished the first day of tournament play in 10th place at 69-over-par, sitting only above the University of Wyoming and California State University at Northridge. Ly emerged as NIU’s top performer after the first two rounds, hitting 14-over-par to tie for 39th place going into Tuesday’s final round.
NIU’s third round performance proved to be its most successful as the top four scorers combined to hit 21-over. Ly recorded the best performance of any Huskie at the competition with a one-under-par outing in the final round. The Huskies finished off with a stroke count of 90-over for a total score of 954.

On experience playing against unique competition:
“It’s been a great experience to see some of the teams we never see like UCLA and USC and to play with UCLA (Monday),” Kester said.
