As people have been stuck inside for the last two years with little to nothing to do, they have been reminiscing on when life was good and fun. In 2013 and 2014 it seemed like everyone was on Tumblr and Pinterest trying to recreate outfits with trendy items, including the popular American Apparel tennis skirt. During this time, there were different fashion, music and film trends that are nostalgic to many and worth reminiscing on.

In 2013, The 1975 released an album that had the song “Chocolate.” That was just the beginning for The 1975, as they shot to fame fairly quickly thanks to Tumblr and the release of their debut self-titled album. Quotes of their lyrics were on everyone’s feed and you saw girl after girl wearing black skinny jeans, a white t-shirt, and black combat boots; similar to The 1975’s lead singer Matty Healy’s style.

Some other artists that rose to fame during that time were The Neighbourhood, Lana Del Rey, Foster the People, Troye Sivan and Ed Sheeran.

Jillian Smiley, a senior art major, said she remembers listening to a lot of Frank Ocean and Foster the People.

“I did listen to The 1975 and The Neighbourhood during that time, but I mostly listened to a lot of Frank Ocean and I still listen to them all today,” Smiley said.

Not only was music on the rise during these years but so were fashion trends. People became obsessed with mustaches and emoji-print everything. You had pillows, necklaces, and even clothes with different emojis all over. At one point kids were showing up to school in emoji-print tracksuits and strutting around the school making everyone jealous.

The mustache trend got a little out of hand with people wearing skirts with mustaches on them, or even getting a mustache tattooed on the outside of their finger so they could put it up to their nose. It was cute and trendy at the time, but time has passed and now it is way out of style.

“I never participated in the fashion trends but I remember one of my friends had the sunglasses with a mustache chained to them that everyone thought was cool,” said Sarah McLaughlin, a first-year engineering major.

2013 and 2014 were also the years of the dystopia genre. You had “The Hunger Games” and “Divergent” trilogies along with their movies that people were rushing to the movie theater to see.

Sara Haapala, a graduate student studying rehabilitation counseling, said that she remembers mostly reading the “Percy Jackson” series and “The Hunger Games” trilogy during those years.

This was also the era of John Green’s books, especially his bestseller “The Fault in Our Stars.” The movie adaption was also a success with stars like Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort, who both had starred in the “Divergent” films.

Those two years were filled with some cringe-worthy but good memories. We got a lot of good art and music out of it. Now we wait to see which trends will make a comeback.
