What I’m watching this weekend: Northern Star Staff
April 21, 2022
Whether you’re catching up on classwork, preparing for finals or procrastinating, you’re bound to have some time while eating or relaxing to watch something new. Here are some of what us at the Northern Star will be watching this weekend, and you should too.
The Good Place (Netflix)
“The Good Place” is a dystopian comedy series starring Kristen Bell, William Jackson Harper, D’Arcy Carden, Ted Danson, Jameela Jamil and Manny Jacinto.
The series begins with Eleanor Shellstrop, played by Kristen Bell, finding out that she is in the afterlife and has made it into the ‘Good Place.’ She soon realizes that she was confused with another individual and that she isn’t supposed to be there. The series is unpredictable, entertaining and humorous, but different from other comedy series. It has dystopia and fantasy elements that keep you on your toes, unsure of what to expect next.
“The Good Place” was created by Michael Schur. Schur is known for being a writer and producer for “The Office” (he also was the actor who played Mose, Dwight’s cousin, in the series) and co-creator for “Parks and Recreation” and “Brooklyn Nine-Nine.” – Madelaine Vikse, Lifestyle Editor
Castlevania (Netflix)
“Castlevania” is an original animated series created for the Netflix streaming service. It is based on the Japanese video game of the same title. It is a dark fantasy-action series and centers on a monster hunter, Trevor Belmont, played by Richard Armitage. Trevor Belmont comes from a long line of hunters that have protected the world from evil, but have been excommunicated. The series takes place after the world has been thrust into turmoil by Dracula himself after he has released an army of creatures on humanity. Trevor is aided by a magician and Dracula’s half-human son.
From the very start of the series, it actually humanizes Dracula and gives a motivation as to why he has declared a war on humanity. We get to see that throughout the series. Season one and two is where we really get to see that part of the character. The same goes for other characters as this show so far has done a good job at character development. The show also has great action sequences that flow with the animation style.
This series is a recommendation for others that are fans of horror and fantasy, or even looking for a great updated version of Dracula. “Castlevania ” has four seasons currently available to stream on Netflix and, in my opinion, one of the best video game adaptations ever. – Kyron Lewis, Lifestyle Writer
Manifest (Netflix)
“Manifest” is a supernatural-drama series revolving around passengers of flight 828, which disappeared for five-and-a-half years before finally returning. The problem is that none of the passengers experienced the same passage of time; to them it was a normal three-hour flight with crazy turbulence. The main characters of the series are played by Josh Dallas as Ben Stone, Melissa Roxburgh as his sister Michaela Stone, and Jack Messina who plays Ben’s son Cal.
The story revolves around their disappearance and messages that all the passengers can hear in their head. With three seasons out, this is the perfect binge-worthy show to get you hooked. – Waleed Alamleh, Sports Reporter
