DeKALB – Kohl’s will be welcoming a new cosmetic brand within its stores on Friday.

Sephora will have its grand opening inside Kohl’s, 2070 Sycamore Road, to join the several other Sephora stores that have collaborated with the department store. 

“400 new Sephora at Kohl’s shops join 200 existing Sephora at Kohl’s locations; on track to open 850 total shops by 2023,” according to a Feb. 15 Kohl’s news release. 

Sephora at Kohl’s is 2,500 square feet and is laid out exactly to give the feel of a stand-alone Sephora, according to the news release. 

“Within all Sephora at Kohl’s locations, customers can explore the signature Sephora experience with a carefully curated assortment of prestige makeup, skincare, hair, and fragrance brands, as well as innovations in clean beauty and self-care,” the news release reads. 

The opening of a new cosmetic store offers an advantage for NIU students such as members of Glam Squad, which is an organization for students interested in beauty and fashion. 

“We vow to ensure that all students who are interested in getting in fashion are able to express themselves fully and unapologetically through its work through our organization,” president of Glam Squad Jadakess Neal said. 

Neal said that Sephora goes hand in hand with what their organization stands for. 

Neal said she likes Sephora because the company supports Black-owned businesses and sells Black-owned brands. She also said it offers a diverse range of foundation colors, so she is able to find a shade that matches her skin tone. 

“Having a store like Sephora come to DeKalb would be great for students to get inspired and be really great for inclusion and diversity, which is something that I truly believe is needed in the DeKalb area,” Neal said. 

City Manager Bill Nicklas said that the City of DeKalb welcomes the opening of Sephora inside a portion of Kohl’s since it offers a new type of product. 

“I think there are sufficient customers in our surface area that make it worth their while, so if they’re serving the customers in the area, I think it’s all good for the city,” Nicklas said. 

Sephora will also be offering six new brands at its Sephora at Kohl’s locations.

“​​Since our partnership with Kohl’s began, we’ve always had the intention to keep the Sephora at Kohl’s beauty assortment as relevant and similar to our freestanding Sephora stores as possible,” said Artemis Patrick, Sephora’s executive vice president and global chief merchandising officer in the news release. “We want every customer who comes to Sephora at Kohl’s to be able to discover new brands and find their favorites, just like they do at our other Sephora stores.”
