DeKalb County mobile food pantry announces new events, text alert system

DeKALB — The DeKalb County Community Gardens (DCCG) mobile food pantry is coming to town for multiple events throughout the month of September. The “Grow Mobile” food pantry is a joint effort provided by the DeKalb County Health Department, the DeKalb County Community Action Office, Kish Health and NIU to bring fresh food to food deserts throughout DeKalb county. According to the DCCG’s website, “Eventually the program will be expanded to be a traveling health oasis delivering a range of health-related services and information.”
In 2021, over 130 Grow Mobile events were hosted throughout DeKalb County in 11 different towns, according to the DeKalb County Community Gardens.
DCCG’s Grow Mobile will arrive in the City of DeKalb on multiple occasions next month. For more events located outside DeKalb, you can visit DCCG’s website. Residents of DeKalb can expect to find Grow Mobile in town at the following events:
- Sept. 1 – University Village Apartments (in the Community Center), 3-5 PM, 722 N. Annie Glidden Road
- Sept. 8 – Westminster Presbyterian Church, 11 a.m.-12 p.m., 830 N. Annie Glidden Road
- Sept. 13 – Family Service Agency of DeKalb County, 3:30-5 p.m., 1325 Sycamore Road
- Sept. 20 – University Village Apartments (in the Community Center), 3-5 p.m., 722 N. Annie Glidden Road
- Sept. 22 – Westminster Presbyterian Church, 11 a.m.-12 p.m., 830 N. Annie Glidden Road
DeKalb County Community Gardens has also announced the release of a new mobile text alert system. This system will allow citizens of DeKalb county to receive alerts on where and when an upcoming Grow Mobile event will be taking place by texting “FreeGroceries” to 8447272012 to sign up.
Grow Mobile, along with other efforts promoted by the DCCG, is free to all of those who come, with no requirements necessary to receive food and other donated items.
