Graduation application deadlines, how to apply
NIU’s graduation ceremony will be held at the Convocation Center for graduates and undergraduates. Graduate Commencement will be held on May 12 and undergraduate commencement will be held on May 13.
If you know that this will be your final term, then you should apply for graduation with your adviser. During this meeting you should ensure that all transcripts, grade changes, substitutions, adviser approval letters and the remainder of the necessary information on your Records and Registration file is correct and up to date. If there are any discrepancies, contact Records and Registration and your adviser as soon as possible.
To apply for graduation, login into your MyNIU account and click on the Self-Service link. Go to the ‘other academies’ link and select ‘apply for graduation.’ Then you will click on the ‘go’ button. After this, hit the ‘apply for graduation’ link that will be found next to all of your degree information. Select your desired graduation term and press continue. Lastly, review all of your information; once you are sure it is all correct, click ‘submit application.’
The graduation deadline to apply for Fall 2022 graduation is Sept. 1. Those looking to apply for Spring 2023 graduation must do so between Aug. 1 through Feb. 1. Those looking to apply for Summer 2023 must do so between Aug. 1 through June 15. Following the same dates are the deadlines to edit your privacy settings, which determines whether your name will be shown in the commencement program, according to the NIU website.
If you cannot complete all of your requirements for the term in which you applied to graduate, you must change your graduation term within the deadline period as well or 30 days into the following semester with the Records and Registration department.
Once your grades are being processed, a final graduation check will begin. This is to see if you qualify for distinctions and this process lasts 14 days after the grades are in. In these 14 days, you must ensure that your file is complete. If you cannot resolve complications in this period, you must change your graduation date and inform Records and Registration.
Your degree will be sent to the permanent address that is associated with your file in Records and Registration.
