DeKALB — The Legislative Branch of NIU’s Student Government Association appointed a new Deputy Speaker and Historian on Friday.

Senator Ethan DeMeuse and Senator Atlas Babcock were appointed to the positions of Deputy Speaker and Historian, respectively. They will continue to serve on NIU’s student Senate while carrying out these new administrative roles.

Senator DeMeuse, upon appointment of his new role, expressed his excitement for the position to the Senate. “I am excited, I feel like I have the experience and knowledge for this role,” DeMeuse said.

Senator Babcock, appointed to the role of Historian, expressed equal excitement for taking on a more focused role within the SGA. In a speech before the Senate, Senator Babcock explained a new plan to conserve a collection of art belonging to NIU’s student government, expressing that its current conditions of storage are less than adequate.

“This collection of art is sitting below the (Founders Memorial) Library, in an environment that is not temperature-controlled. I hope to work with others to preserve the collection and preserve its history,” Babcock said.

The roles of Deputy Speaker and Historian come with their own sets of responsibilities, alongside being a Senator. According to the SGA bylaws, the Deputy Speaker must provide oversight to senate chairs, collect weekly committee reports and assist the Speaker in their duties. The Historian must archive all past SGA business, maintain historical archives in conjunction with local governments, collect press releases for the SGA and create archives of student legislation.
