DeKalb Park District to spice up the city with 4 ‘spooky season’ celebrations
DeKALB – Expect whimsy and family-friendly fun this Halloween season from the DeKalb Park District, which has four upcoming events planned for the community to enjoy, according to an Oct. 6 news release.
DeKalb Halloween House Decorating Contest (Oct. 19)
For the third year in a row, DeKalb residents will be able to decorate their houses for this creepy and kooky competition. This is perfect for students living off-campus who want to bond with their housemates as they decorate their home for one unifying goal: awards. Categories to win are Best Overall Theme, Best Special Effects, Scariest and People’s Choice. Judging will begin at 4 p.m. and end at 10:30 p.m.
There is a $5 fee per house to enter into the contest, according to the news release. Visit the contest page for further details and instructions.
Howl-o-ween (Oct. 22)
DeKalb residents and students with pet dogs will be pleased to know that the DeKalb Park District will also be hosting a dog costume contest at Katz Dog Park, located at 393 W Dresser Road. Judging will begin at 11 a.m. and prizes will be given in three categories: Most Spook-tacular, Howling with Laughter and Best Owner/Pet Costume Combo, according to the news release.

Monster Mash Splash (Oct. 23)
This event is for the kiddos of DeKalb. At 2 p.m. at Huntley Middle School Pool, 1515 S 4th St., children 12 and under are invited to celebrate Halloween with several themed games and activities, including a pumpkin swimming relay and Toss the Eyeball.
For residents, the fee is $20, and for non-residents, the fee is $25. To register or for further information, click here.
Pumpkin Smash ‘n’ Bash (Nov. 5)
The festivities don’t stop after Halloween has officially passed. DeKalb’s final fall foray takes place at 1 p.m. on Hopkins Park Sled Hill, 1403 Sycamore Road. Attendees who register will get to participate in a pumpkin rolling competition, and once the race to the bottom is over, smash their pumpkins into compost in preparation for spring.
There is a $5 fee for residents and $6 fee for non-residents to enter into the competition. Spectators get in for free. To register, which is required in order to compete, click here.
