Wrestlers drop 2-of-3; Vatch changes outlook
February 3, 1992
The NIU wrestling squad went into the weekend trying to change its ways; instead, coach Ed Vatch changed his.
The Huskies (2-11) dropped two of three on the road to Drake University (31-9) and Wisconsin-Stevens Point (29-17).
With the Huskies’ only win coming from a (42-9) triumph over host Chicago State, head coach Ed Vatch stressed that the remainder of the season will be geared toward individuals.
“I just think we’re capable of much more than this, but we’re hurt and banged up,” Vatch said. “When it rains it pours, and right now it’s pouring on us. We just have to suck it up for the end of the year and individual competition.”
In Friday’s opening match with Drake, the Huskies found themselves in a 21-0 hole, before T.C Dantzler got the Huskies on the scoreboard with a 20-9 decision at 158 pounds. Unfortunately, the only other Huskie to register points was Mel Heckman, who recorded a pin at 190.
Against Stevens-Point, NIU forfeited the 118- and 134-pound weight classes to go down by an early 12-0 mark and ended up losing by the same dozen.
Heckman and Dantzler were the only two individuals to score victories in all three of their matches.
