What I’m watching this weekend: Sarah Rose
November 3, 2022
Take all that leftover Halloween candy and relax from the holiday with these three motion pictures, ranging from audacious 19th-century female heroines to an appreciable documentary about climate change.
“Anne with an E” (Netflix)
“Anne with an E” takes on a new spin from the classic novel “Anne of Green Gables” by L.M. Montgomery. The show takes place in the 1890s and follows Anne Shirley, a teenage orphan sent to the Canadian province of Prince Edward Island to work for farmers Marilla, played by Geraldine James and Matthew Cuthbert, played by R. H. Thomson.
Anne, played by Amybeth McNulty, is imaginative and highly intelligent, often surprising the people around her with her impulsive mannerisms. The show explores Anne’s adventures and challenges she and others face in the historical time period such as sexism, freedom of speech and homosexuality.
“Anne with an E” premiered in May 2017 and ran for three seasons before being canceled in 2019.
“Paris to Pittsburgh” (Disney +)
“Paris to Pittsburgh” is a 2018 drama-documentary, directed by Sidney Beaumont and Michael Bonfiglio, that follows America’s efforts in tackling climate change after withdrawing from the Paris Climate Agreement.
The documentary highlights how climate change is affecting all regions of the country. The film shines a light on individuals who are making changes to their communities whether that be installing solar panels on homes or organizing protests that advocate against climate change.
“Paris to Pittsburgh” is a great film to watch for those who want more information on climate change and for anyone who has questions on how to make a difference.
“Enola Holmes” (Netflix)
Millie Bobby Brown stars as Enola Holmes, the famous detective Sherlock Holmes’ younger sister, in the 2020 Netflix film of the same name.
When Enola’s mother mysteriously disappears, Enola follows the clues her mother has left behind to try and track her down, against her brother’s wishes. Enola is a bright teenage girl who shares the same intelligence as her famous brother Sherlock, played by Henry Cavill, and intends to prove to everyone that she is just as capable of being a detective as her brother is.
While looking for her mother, Enola involves herself in another mystery of the Viscount Tewkesbury, played by Louis Partridge, who is on the run from an unknown killer. “Enola Holmes” is adapted from “The Enola Holmes Mysteries” book series by Nancy Springer.
The second installment “Enola Holmes 2” premieres on Nov. 4 on Netflix, making it the perfect occasion to watch both films back to back.
