All a ploy

In your Feb. 25 editorial, you make some incorrect assumptions about people who oppose gun control. For example, it’s not all about “business”; the consumer firearms industry just isn’t that big. Lobby groups like the National Rifle Association are powerful, but that’s because the NRA alone has three million due-paying members—more than the Democratic Party. Guns wouldn’t be available if many millions of people didn’t want it that way.

Furthermore, the 25 percent tax Mayor Daley is asking for is really an excise tax. We have excise taxes on alcohol and tobacco too, but these have scarcely put a dent in consumption of these products. Does Daley really expect to reduce gun sales, or is this a ploy to raise funds for his financially-strapped city?
