NIU holds on after comeback

By Dan Moran | October 18, 1987

Wishbone met wishbone Saturday at Huskie Stadium, and in the end, it was a matter of which defense was better at stopping the offense it practices against. NIU escaped with a 27-21 victory over the Southwest Missouri State Bears, who showed up two hours...

NIU football notebook

By Dave Tuley | October 18, 1987

Random notes on tonight's intrasquad scrimmage and on the spring practice session:

Even the most casual football fan will notice one thing missing from tonight's game—there will be no kickoffs.

According to Head Coach Jerry Pettibone, the Huskies will be punting and placekicking, but kickoffs are being eliminated because they are "a high-injury situation."

Instead, teams will put the ball in play at their own 35-yard line at the start of each half and after scores.

Other aspects to make the game as realistic as possible include Big 10 officials and regulation time-keeping. Pettibone said the clock would run as in a regular game until the final quarter, where it may run without interruption "depending on the score of the game."

Wednesday's practice was to have been a light workout in shorts, but was canceled due to the heavy rainfall. However, the spring session generally enjoyed ideal weather conditons.

One Huskie who said the Midwest's version of spring does not agree with him is Drake Shead. The junior running back complained on one cloudy practice day of how fine the weather is in his native Plano, Texas ("Just a Plano boy," defensive tackle Rodney Akis called him).

"That would be a good story. I'm the only one around here from Texas, and this is cold up here," Shead said.

Sophomore Akis has an interesting souvenir for his efforts on the football field—two long scars paralleling his kneecap. The 5-foot-11-inch, 225-pounder from Chicago's King High School proudly displayed an elaborate brace, a more advanced model than the mandatory variety worn by each Huskie during practices.

NIU spikers glide by weak Phoenix crew

By Kari Brackett | October 18, 1987

NIU's volleyball team increased its win total Friday night by defeating the Fighting Phoenix of Wisconsin-Green Bay 7-15, 15-3, 15-6, 15-8. "They play a different kind of volleyball," outside hitter Amy Garrett said. "They play high school volleyball."...

Iwema moonlights to aid Huskie cause

By Dave Tuley | October 15, 1987

When a football player is named a team's top offensive player for two out of three games, you would not think he would be moved to another position. But that is not the case with NIU's Kent Iwema. The 6-foot-1, 209-pound senior has been moved from tight...

Bell’s squad plays Purdue

By Chris Sigley | October 15, 1987

Inconsistency and basic skill mistakes have plagued the NIU field hockey team lately. If it finds a cure before Friday, it should have a good chance to win both matches against Ohio and Purdue this weekend. "Purdue is a very tough team—they're presently...

NIU’s Holmes a mover on, off volleyball court

By Kari Brackett | October 15, 1987

Not only does the 6-foot-1 junior keep active on the NIU volleyball court, but she also stays active by moving around the country. Holmes moved from Kentucky to Indiana in seventh grade, and during her junior year in high school she left for Connecticut....

By Jim Wozniak | October 15, 1987

Starting today, NIU athletics encounters what is arguably one of the most important weeks in its history. What began as an internal and external review of the athletic department has developed into a changing of the guard at the athletic helm. NIU President...

Huskies tie hot Redbirds with late Garofolo score

By Tom Clegg | October 14, 1987

NIU dueled Illinois State to a 1-1 tie Wednesday night, coming from behind with a late second-half goal from senior Barry Garofolo. Freshman Rob Lisek got the assist on Garofolo's goal with 7:41 remaining in regulation. "He centered it, and I chested...

University can prevent ‘automotive kidnapping’

October 14, 1987

DeKalb has often been referred to as "The Land of Corn." But I think it's time we start calling it the land of tow-away zones. I—like most students—have seen too many other students chasing after tow trucks and shouting obscenities as their cars are...

Film a disservice

October 14, 1987

Deep Throat is "the very best porn film ever made," so says Al Goldstein. Is this under the guise of education? This is a sure winner for NIU's "image." Encouraging excessive drinking parties leading to alcholism, along with co-ed living quarters in dorms...

By Kari Brackett | October 8, 1987

NIU's football team is not the only squad which will play at home during Homecoming weekend. The Huskie volleyball team will take on Marquette tonight at Chick Evans Field House at 7 p.m. On Saturday the lady spikers travel to South Bend, Ind. to compete...
