Controversy still surrounds Guillen, Marlins

By Jerry Burnes | April 15, 2012

The Miami Marlins don’t care about the Cuban community and IBM couldn’t really care less about women’s equality. Neither organization will say that of course, but their actions - in light of recent controversies - paint that picture pretty clearly....

The Rant: Tiger, Tiger Woods y’all

By Sean Anderson | April 9, 2012

The roar is back on the golf course. Tiger Woods winning at the Arnold Palmer Invitational is great for the game of golf; people love to see him compete. Seeing that fist pump has brought back great memories of Tiger winning. I know he won’t be the...

Tebow’s latest religious gimmicks are over the top

By Jerry Burnes | April 9, 2012

Tim Tebow is making a mockery of religion. He’s like Jerry Falwell meets Oprah Winfrey. He’s popular and a staunch Christian, and he’s not afraid to exploit either when given the chance. Example A: Tebow showed up to an outdoor Easter Sunday service...

The Rant: Ripping into Rip

By Jimmy Johnson | April 4, 2012

It’s time to forget the notion Richard Hamilton is going to contribute for the Chicago Bulls.

I, for one, am waiting for a collage featuring Hamilton sitting on the Bulls’ bench holding his head up and sporting his egg white headband.

It’s funny how Hamilton was pegged as the acquisition to get the Bulls past the Miami Heat.

Instead, LeBron James and Dwyane Wade will likely blow past him if these two teams meet in the Eastern Conference Finals.

Hamilton hasn’t been a huge disappointment, though, if you didn’t have pie-in-the-sky expectations for him.

Look at the facts: prior to joining the Bulls, Hamilton’s combined minutes from the regular season and playoffs was 32,580.

He’s old, beat up and with it being a condensed NBA season, he’s out of place.

The Bulls’ only chance to hoist the Larry O’Brien trophy will come down to getting top-notch performances from Derrick Rose, Carlos Boozer, Joakim Noah and Luol Deng, and not from Mr. Glass.

By Jimmy Johnson | April 3, 2012

Two years ago, NIU football was hit with a major loss when then coach Jerry Kill bolted for Minnesota. It was a decision that left many bitter, upset and questioned what went into Kill’s choice to leave. Soon after the Kill departed, Jeff Compher, NIU...

Fisher deserves MAC C.O.Y honors

By Mike Romor | April 2, 2012

In what has been his best season at the head of the NIU men’s tennis program, coach Patrick Fisher has made a big impact in the MAC. Fisher took over the Huskies three seasons ago. This year’s squad is showing signs of being a major threat in the...

The Rant: Wait, the MLB season started?

By Brian Thomas | March 28, 2012

For those of you who were wondering when the MLB season started, it already did. Last night in Tokyo, Japan at 5:10 in the morning U.S. time, the Seattle Mariners and Oakland Athletics kicked off the 2012 campaign in an 11 inning thriller. The question...

Spring isn’t just the time of the year to enjoy weddings and bunnies: it’s football time. NIU football will officially begin its spring practices today. Fresh off their first MAC Championship in 28 years, coach Dave Doeren and the Huskies are back...

U of I isn’t the destination it’s being made out to be

By Jimmy Johnson | March 26, 2012

You think the NIU men’s basketball program is a joke? Just take the 169.7-mile trip on I-39 South and I-74 East down to Champaign and you’ll discover the latest embarrassment of late in the Land of Lincoln: U of I. Pegged by many as a “top-25 job...

The Rant: Broncos need to quit horsing around

By Matt Hopkinson | March 26, 2012

The Denver Broncos took one step forward, and two awkward clumsy steps back this off-season. The step forward was without a doubt getting rid of a half-back masquerading as a quarterback Tim Tebow. The first step backward was signing Peyton Manning. While...

Faceoff: Cubs, Sox chatter

By Sean Anderson and Matt Hopkinson | March 26, 2012

Matt Hopkinson: Well, Sean, baseball season is around the corner. Opening day hope springs eternal for Cubs fan, and mistrust and skepticism from White Sox fans. While I watch both teams, to avoid a Capulet/Montagues situation, we’ll go with I’m a...

Roger that, Mr. Goodell

By Jimmy Johnson | March 21, 2012

The game of football cannot be altered. It features grown men using their bodies as human wrecking balls. Year after year, the players get stronger, faster and the overall pace of the game increases. Within the past month, the NFL took an ugly turn with...
