The spirits – our wonderful readers, that is – have convened and selected Nick Cipra’s BoJack Horseman costume as the winner of the Northern Star Halloween Costume Contest!
Voting for the Northern Star Halloween Costume Contest closed 5 p.m. Tuesday, and Cipra, a senior geology major, won a $50 Visa gift card for his mag-neigh-ficent costume.
BoJack Horseman is the main character in the popular adult animated show of the same name. The show follows the life of an anthropomorphic horse and his attempts to return to Hollywood after his fall from acting stardom.
Cipra often watches the show with his girlfriend, who dressed up as Princess Carolyn – BoJack Horseman’s girlfriend in the show – this Halloween.
“My girlfriend has dyed her hair pink already, and we both really loved ‘BoJack Horseman’ the show,” Cipra said. “Because a lot of the characters are animals, they do a lot of animal-like behaviors, and they make a lot of really, like, clever jokes that go under the radar about animals.”
Cipra crafted the large horse head out of paper mache for a party over Halloweekend, but he had never tried paper mache before. Cipra estimates the project took him about six hours over the course of two weeks.
“Paper mache is surprisingly easy, and actually, I basically just researched and looked up (how to do it),” Cipra said. “It seems hard to make your first paper mache, like something wearable over your head, but it worked out pretty well.”
If you’re looking to find easy ways to homemake a costume for tonight, or any other decorative occasion, paper mache may be an affordable option.
“It was so easy, and it’s so cheap because it was just flour and water for, like, the glue and then newspaper,” Cipra said. “And it’s really easy to cover up mistakes if you are bad at paper mache because you just keep layering, right, layering it on top.”
Congratulations to BoJack Horseman, thank you to all who participated, and have a super spooky, super happy Halloween!
