Coit snags Huskie of the Week after team-leading scoring efforts

DeKALB – NIU sophomore guard David Coit scored 21 or more points in back-to-back games on his way to receiving the Northern Star’s first Huskie of the Week honor of Spring 2023.

Coit led the Huskies in scoring during their recent matchups with Miami University on Tuesday and Eastern Michigan University on Saturday. He played all 40 minutes Tuesday, and leading the team with 21 points on 9-for-15 shooting from the field including three 3-pointers. Coit went on to score 24 points at EMU off 8-for-12 field goal shooting, five of those makes coming from three-point land.

The Columbus, N.J., native is in his first season at NIU after transferring from Atlantic Cape Community College in New Jersey. He leads NIU with 281 points, overtaking junior guard Keshawn Williams as the Huskies’ points leader with his outing at EMU. Coit has started each of NIU’s 19 games this season, shooting 47.2% on field goals and averaging 14.8 points per game.

Coit and the Huskies resume action at 7 p.m. Tuesday as NIU plays host to the Kent State University Golden Flashes at the Convocation Center. NIU, now 3-3 in the Mid-American Conference, will be challenged with containing a flashy Kent State team inching closer to an appearance in the AP Top 25 rankings.

Next week’s Huskie of the Week will be announced Jan. 31.

The Northern Star Huskie of the Week is voted for on a weekly basis. Student-athletes considered for this week’s edition were chosen based on their performance in competitions taking place from Jan. 16 to Jan. 22.
