DeKALB – NIU women’s golf ties for fourth place at the Atlantic Invitational behind a top 10 finish from junior Emily Romancew.

The Huskies started the invitational strong after being in first place out of twelve schools at the conclusion of the first round. After a rough second round, NIU fell to fourth place and remained there until the conclusion of the event.

“We played really well that first round, and then the second round was pretty poor. Today was just kind of middle of the road,” head coach Kim Kester said via an NIU athletics press release. “We had way too many balls out of play. We kind of handed it back to everybody in that second round yesterday.”

NIU’s final score through three rounds was eight over par, 860. The Huskies were tied with Georgia State University at the end of the event and finished behind Florida Atlantic University, whose final score was seven over par, 859.

Romancew was the highest placing NIU golfer, finishing in 10th place. Romancew was in third place going into the third round, but a third round score of three over par caused her to fall seven places. In round one, Romancew scored three under par and scored an impressive five under par in the second round. Her final score was two under par, 211.

Junior Jasmine Ly finished just one point behind her teammate in 11th with her final score coming out to one under par, 212. Ly finished her first round at two under par, the second round at even par and the final round at one under par. Ly also totaled seven birdies through three rounds.

Senior Ahra Ko was the next Huskie finisher, as she finished tied for 23rd place with two other golfers. Ko finished with a score of five over par, 218, alongside Emelia Pack of Queens University of Charlotte and Grace Rigby-Walden of Florida Gulf Coast University. Ko collected a total of seven birdies over the two-day event.

Graduate Sydney Naro came into this invitational just two weeks removed from a first-place finish at the Falcon Florida Classic on Feb. 6 and 7. Naro ended this invitational tied for 26th with two other golfers, Wendy Hsiao from Stetson University and Noemie Boulbes from Georgia State University. Naro’s final score was six over par, 219.

The Huskies’ next invitational will be The Beach Invitational and will take place on Monday and Tuesday. The event will be located in Mission Viejo, California at the Mission Viejo Country Club.
