Ko, Ly help Huskies take second at MAC Championship

DeKALB NIU women’s golf took second out of 10 teams at the 2023 MAC Championship. Senior Ahra Ko had the best showing, picking up seven birdies and finishing tied for eighth place. 

The Huskies finished the first round in fifth place, shooting 17-over par. A score of 307 in the second round propelled NIU to second place. NIU finished the third round shooting a 296, solidifying second place. 

Ko finished the tournament tied for seventh place, her best since an eighth place finish at the Falcon Florida Classic. Ko finished the first round with a score of 77 – five over par – leading to a tie for 22nd place after day one. With a score of 77 in the second round, Ko jumped to tied for 15th place. 

Ko moved into the top 10 after a tournament low 71 – one-under par –  in the third round. 

NIU’s second best golfer of the tournament was junior Jasmine Ly, who finished at 10-over par in 10th place. Ly led the charge in the first round with a score of 74, two-over par. Ly shot a 77 in the second round and finished the tournament with a score of 75 in the third round. 

Tying for 16th and securing 11 birdies, junior Emily Romancew was NIU’s third highest placing golfer. Romancew finished tied for 22nd after shooting a 77 in the first round. 

After a tournament high 79 in the second round, Romancew fell two spots and finished the second day tied for 24th place. The Pierrefonds, Quebec native shot a 75 in the third round, rounding out the tournament with her lowest score.

Graduate student Sydney Naro had NIU’s fourth best finish, shooting 19-over par and finishing tied for 24th. In the first round Naro shot an 84 but went on to shoot a 76 in the second round. Naro closed the tournament with a score of 75.

The Huskies’ fifth ranking golfer was junior Karen Liu, who finished tied for 34th place. Liu shot a 77 in both the first and second round, but a score of 86 bit Liu in the third round.

It remains unknown whether or not the Huskies will receive a bid to NCAA Regionals. The NCAA will hand pick teams to compete in the tournament at noon Wednesday on the Golf Channel. Selections will also be available on NCAA.com shortly after.
