SA approves funding, passes resolutions
November 11, 1991
The Student Association senate got down to business to approve supplemental funding requests and pass two resolutions.
Students’ Legal Assistance requested $15,000 in supplemental funding and was granted this request with a vote of acclamation.
Don Henderson, director of Students’ Legal Assistance, said he is pleased with the senate approval and said the support is gratifying.
The Office of Campus Recreation requested $3,000 in additional funding to build backstops for the softball field behind the recycling center and the senate approved the request.
“The softball backstops would be a great addition to provide a safer environment for the participants. Safety is very critical for us and OCR. We need your support in order to provide a safer program for students,” said Alicia Cosky, director of campus recreation.
In last year’s budget we had additional money which had to be allocated for students’ wages when minimum wage was increased so this project was not brought up then, she said.
Jodie English, recreation adviser, said she’s pleased because it’s a general benefit to students.
NIU senior Thomas Gary, political science major, proposed two resolutions to the SA senate, both of which were passed.
The first resolved that the SA implore George Bush and other national leaders to neutralize the campaign of David Duke. The vote was 23 to two with five abstentions.
The second resolution called for the university to prioritize their goals and put academics first and foremost. The resolution carried with 27 votes in favor, one against and two abstentions.
