DeKALB – NIU senior guard Darweshi Hunter and redshirt senior forward Anthony Crump have entered the transfer portal. Hunter entered the portal Thursday and Crump entered Monday. 

Hunter and Crump are two of three NIU players to enter the transfer portal. Senior guard Kaleb Thornton was the first after he announced his commitment to the University of Akron Monday. 

Hunter played the last two seasons at NIU, finishing with career averages of 6.4 PPG (points per game) and 2.8 RPG (rebounds per game) while shooting 36.1% from three-point range. Hunter appeared in 60 games for the Huskies, making 18 starts. 

In the 2022-23 season, Hunter played in 30 games, making eight starts. Hunter averaged a career high 9.0 PPG on a career best 46.5% from the field. Hunter also averaged a career high 3.0 RPG. Hunter’s 42.1% shooting from three-point range led the Huskies and ranked seventh in the Mid-American Conference. Hunter’s career high in a Huskies uniform was a 22 point, four rebound performance against the University of Toledo on Jan. 14.

Crump spent the last three seasons with the Huskies, finishing his NIU career with averages of 6.3 PPG, 4.7 RPG and 1.1 APG (assists per game). Crump played 79 games in a Huskies uniform, making 67 starts. 

Crump started 31 of the 32 games he appeared in this season, averaging a career high 7.7 PPG on a career best 61.2% shooting from the field. Crump’s career best 5.1 RPG, led the Huskies this season. Crump’s career season was highlighted by a 20 point, eight rebound performance against Gonzaga University on Dec. 12, 2022.

Crump and Hunter helped lead the Huskies to a 13-19 overall record and a 9-9 conference record this season – their best record since 2019-20. Crump and Hunter’s play helped the Huskies reach their first MAC tournament since 2020.
