Huskies shut out by Ball State in conference showdown

DeKALB – NIU women’s tennis was swept away by the Ball State University Cardinals Friday afternoon in Muncie, Indiana, by a final score of 7-0. 

NIU’s number one doubles team of sophomore Nataly Ninova and freshman Erika Dimitriev were knotted in a 3-3 battle with BSU players Amy Kaplan and Annika Planninsek. The match went unfinished, but BSU won at the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles.

Ninova was the only Huskie able to win her singles match, as Ball State dominated the singles competition. She started her match at the No. 4 singles by taking the first set 6-4, before Planinsek came back to win the next two sets. 

Huskie junior Diana Lukyanova played a thriller match against junior Maria Polishchuk

at the No. 2 singles. She lost the first set in a tiebreaker and lost the second set 6-3.

The Huskies’ overall record is now 11-11 and they are 1-3 against Mid-American Conference opponents. The Cardinals are 14-3 overall and 3-1 in the MAC. 

The Huskies travel to Kalamazoo to take on Western Michigan University at noon Sunday. Live stats will be available on iOnCourt.
