This Week in Huskie Sports: Sept. 18 to Sept. 24

DeKALB – NIU Athletics embarks on another busy week of sports, headlined by football’s return home and volleyball’s first conference action of the season.

FOOTBALL

Saturday, Sept. 23: vs. University of Tulsa, 11 a.m.

DeKalb, Illinois / Huskie Stadium

NIU football (1-2) plays their final non-conference game of the season Saturday against the University of Tulsa Golden Hurricanes (1-2). Tulsa’s last two games have been against ranked opponents in No. 8 University of Washington and No. 16 Oklahoma University. The Huskies are looking to get back into the win column after dropping their previous two games. 

VOLLEYBALL

Thursday, Sept. 21: at Bowling Green State University, 5 p.m. CT

NIU volleyball (2-10) begins conference play this weekend by being the first MAC squad to face defending champion Bowling Green (6-5) this season. The Huskies embark to the Stroh Center following a 1-2 performance in last weekend’s UNI Tournament. The series will conclude NIU’s 11-match road streak. Both matches will commence at 5 p.m. CT.

MEN’S GOLF 

Monday, Sept. 18 – Tuesday, Sept. 19: at Virginia Commonwealth University

NIU men’s golf heads to Richmond, Virginia for its second tournament of the season – the VCU Shootout. In its last tournament, the team tied for 10th place with Iowa State University. The Huskies go into the VCU Shootout behind juniors Felix Krammer and Ben Sluzas who both placed within the top-20 at the Gopher Invitational last week. The tournament is an all day event that starts on Monday and ends on Tuesday. 

WOMEN’S GOLF

Sunday, Sept. 17 – Monday, Sept. 18 Mary Fossum Invitational 

Lansing, Michigan / Forest Akers West

After placing fifth out of 16 teams in the Redbird Invitational on Sept. 10 and Sept. 11, NIU women’s golf will now travel to Michigan State University to compete in the Mary Fossum Invitational on Sept. 17 and Sept. 18. 

MEN’S SOCCER

Saturday, Sept. 23: at University of Evansville, 7 p.m.

Evansville, Indiana / Arad McCutchan Stadium

NIU men’s soccer travels to Evansville after dropping its Missouri Valley Conference matchup against No. 15-ranked Missouri State University. The Huskies look to improve from their 2-5 start to the 2023 season.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Thursday, Sept. 21: vs. Western Michigan University, 3 p.m.

Sunday, Sept. 24: vs. University of Toledo, 1 p.m.

After being defeated at home by DePaul, the NIU women’s soccer team will travel to Western Michigan University on Thursday to face off at 3 p.m. and face the University of Toledo on Sunday at home at 1 p.m. 

HOCKEY

Friday, Sept. 22: at University of Illinois, 7 p.m.

Saturday, Sept. 23: at University of Illinois, 7 p.m.

Hockey takes a trip downstate to Champaign to take on the University of Illinois in a two-game road series. NIU recently completed its home-opening series against Kent State, dropping both games by scores of 8-2 Friday and 4-3 Saturday. The series at Illinois will be the first road series of the season for the Huskies.
