Sycamore eyed for tattoo parlor

The controversial tattoo parlor still is trying to locate in the DeKalb area—but for now it is operating out of Rochelle.

Craig Murphy, owner of “Skin of a Different Color” said he will continue tattooing in Rochelle until he can get permission from the Sycamore City Council to open his shop.

Murphy said he still will continue with his lawsuit against the city of DeKalb, but only to receive compensation.

There’s surely no way I’m going to get in there (DeKalb) now,” he said.

“I am following up my lawsuit for compensation for the time I was out of business,” Murphy said.

Murphy was not able to tattoo in DeKalb while his case was pending except for a one-week period when he was granted an

injunction.

Currently his shop is located at 1572 Sycamore Road in Sycamore, but is closed until he has permission to reopen. “I don’t foresee a problem since Sycamore used to have a tattoo shop about five years ago,” he said.

Murphy said he contacted the late Mayor Harold “Red” Johnson before he passed away to ask about opening the business in Sycamore.

He said Johnson told him to write a letter to the council to ask for permission.

Murphy said he will take the letter to the city council’s Monday night meeting.
