Starzec takes SA office

Informing the Student Association senators about important campus issues is the senate speaker’s primary aim.
Mike Starzec was elected Sunday night to the senate speaker position with 24 votes. Sen. Trevell Eddins received nine votes and there were two abstentions.
Starzec said with the time constraints on the advisers, they can’t always go into depth about the issues on hand. He said he would like to find out from the advisers what their reports are about and share the information with the senate so the senators will know the importance of the cabinet’s jobs.
In an outline to the senate, Starzec listed some goals, including getting the senate more involved in campus issues.
“I would like to initiate the practice of inviting major opponents and proponents to debate in front of the senate to help (the senate) see both sides in major issues upon which we will have to decide,” he said.
Student Association President Preston Came said he thinks Starzec will do an excellent job as senate speaker.
The senate speaker serves as the liaison between the senate body and the executive board, Came said. The speaker should be the spokesperson for the senate body, he added.
Came said he was the senate speaker last year, but he said he does not plan to tell Starzec how to do his job. “He was elected by the SA senate and I feel he will do a good job.”
