Task force to discuss governing of OCR

By Linda Warchal

Ground rules were secured yesterday afternoon for future meetings of a task force designed to discuss the shared governing of the rec center.

The committee discussed whether or not the meeting would be open and agreed it would.

Preston Came, Student Association president, said an open meeting was something agreed on between himself and Barbara Henley, vice president for Student Affairs.

He said the SA would withdraw from the meeting if it was not open.

The agreement concerning the governing of the rec center is going under review because of changes in the university constitution.

Henley said the charge of the task force is to “outline a system of shared governess.” Also, the final agreement must conform with current university constitution and bylaws.

Members of the task force were asked by Henley to submit their recommendations by Nov. 1.

Jodie English, SA recreation adviser, said she plans to stick with the orignal agreement established in 1979.

“The only thing we will change is anything that violates the university constitution beyond a shadow of a doubt,” English said.

The committee must achieve consensus without voting. It’s set up this way so out-voting cannot occur.

“We have a unique opportunity here to benefit the long term interests of campus recreation and not just the benefit of any one constituency,” said Donald Buckner, associate vice-president for Student Affairs.

The next meeting of the Task Force is Sept. 26 at 11 a.m.
