More bins help recycling effort

Because of the efforts of the Student Association, recycling will be even easier for students living in residence halls.

There’s been so much interest in the recycling bins at NIU, the SA decided to bring 200 more aluminum can boxes in for the residence halls, said Rachel Vellenga, SA Recycling director.

“We’re going to be getting them in on Friday, and will have them with us on Saturday when curbside is done,” she said.

Interested floors can pick up the boxes on Saturday, Vellenga said, adding there will not be enough boxes for all floors.

If students pick up the recycling boxes, they will be supplied with a bag for them to drop off their cans, or else they will have to use their own bags, Vellenga said.

SA Recycling used its own money to purchase the aluminum can boxes. However, they did not receive the $5,000 grant they applied for from Energy and National Resources. As a result, they will not be able to purchase as many bins as planned for the residence hall floors.

The SA will submit another proposal next year for bins on all the residence floors, Vellenga said.
