Semrau, Polk named basketball assistants
September 16, 1991
When NIU women’s basketball coach Jane Albright-Dieterle picked two new assistant coaches, she found talent from both the playing and coaching worlds.
Sue Semrau and Jonelle Polk were Albright-Dieterle’s choices to fill a pair of open slots because of the wide range of basketball experience the two have. Semrau joins the Huskies as an assistant after having spent the last four years as head women’s basketball coach and assistant athletic director at Occidental College in Los Angeles, Calif. Polk, a 1988 graduate of the University of Illinois and a top player for the Illini, is a part-time assistant who comes to DeKalb after having spent the past two years playing professional ball in Europe.
“I feel real fortunate in having these two on my staff,” Albright-Dieterle said. “Sue is a very unique individual who brings a multitude of talent. If she could succeed as a head coach at the Division III level, she can definitely contribute immediately to our program.”
Semrau not only led her basketball squad to a 51-47 overall slate, but the Washington state native also spent the 1988-89 season coaching the women’s soccer squad.
“Jonelle brings a great combination of talent to our program,” Albright-Dieterle continued. “She comes to us highly recommended.”
Polk, who is pursuing her masters degree in sports management, played professionally in France from 1989-91 and in Italy during the 1988-89 season.
