SAMTB plans to improve service
September 8, 1991
The Student Association Mass Transit Board has plans to deliver better services to riders at NIU.
Evaluating the Huskie Line’s bus stops to provide better service for all those served is a long-term project SAMTB adviser Pat Sanchez said the board is working on.
Each stop will be surveyed to see how accessible it is, especially for riders with disabilities, because the new buses will be equipped with wheelchair lifts.
Providing the buses with wheelchair lifts is something now required by the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Gary Jones, assistant board director, said they will also have to see if the bus schedule is thrown off any when the lifts are used. The buses have an allotted time to wait at each stop.
Jones said he became involved with the mass transit board because he was impressed with the service. He pushed for a smoother running Handivan program to run equally with the Huskie Line.
The Handivan system works by phone and is door-to-door, Jones said. “It is very convenient.”
In the realm of transportation, Sanchez said they would also like to extend the Late Nite Ride Service.
He said a third car will be added and the service will run for a full week instead of weekends.
