SARC/OCR agree to revise document

Sometimes sparks fly when students and administrators meet, but at yesterday’s task force meeting, members were unanimous on the issue of reworking the agreement between the Student Association Recreation Committee and the Office of Campus Recreation.
The committee agreed it was its charge to make recommendations and they also decided to come up with a written document.
“I would like to get rid of the past and move toward the future. Let’s start from scratch and create a document which is ours,” said Juliette Moore, director of campus recreation.
Jodie English, SA recreation adviser, said she agreed there were sections of the 1979-80 agreement which need revision.
English also said she would like to work from the original agreement, but it should be made more readable.
The point of contention surrounding the agreement is whether or not a new agreement will rise from the old one, or if a completely new document will be written up.
“I don’t see why we can’t work through this agreement,” said Preston Came, SA president. The rules might change, but this document should still have some validity, he added.
“I don’t think it’s the responsibility of this committee to revise this (particular) document,” said William Monat, Regency professor and acting director for Division of Public Administration.
“I don’t know what is sacred about this document,” Monat added.
“I can’t put this document aside because I don’t have the power to do that,” Came said.
Alicia Cosky, assistant director for campus recreation, said it is not her intent, by possibly letting go of the document, to take any power away from the students.
Monat said he agreed student input in running the rec center is important.
English said she, Moore and Cosky will meet next week to begin discussing the shared governance of the rec center and formalize it in some sort of agreement by Nov. 1.
