DeKalb – The Latino Resource Center’s annual Welcome Back Brunch and Makers Market brought scrambled eggs, fundraising and music all into one experience.
From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday at the Regency Room in the Holmes Student Center, multiple organizations and small businesses attended the Welcome Back Brunch and Makers Market.
“We have our open house in the fall, Latin Chill and this is the counterpart for the spring,” said Elbia Del Llano Menéndez, assistant director of the Latino Resource Center. “All of our student organizations are invited to have a table and have some exposure and recruit for them.”
There were about 50 students filling the Regency Room, smiling and talking among one another while looking at groups from all around campus.
Damien Maldonado, junior marketing major and member of Supporting Opportunities for Latinos, said there were many new faces interested in his club.
“We were able to sell some of our bracelets that are going to be used toward our funding for the year,” Maldonado said.
Although, there were more than organizations at the event since there was also a Makers Market that allows students to showcase their items that they sell.
Cam Studios is run by Isabel Cambray, a senior illustrations major, and was one of the student-run businesses set up.
Cambray said that Cam Studios is a business run by her where she paints and sells a wide variety of artwork.
“I have skateboards, tote bags and canvases. They are just a couple of things I like to dabble on,” Cambray said.
Cambray had an array of vibrant art including a canvas painting of “The Simpsons” and a skateboard deck painted like corn.
“Our student entrepreneurs are able to showcase their craft items and get their name out into the community at the Makers Market portion,” Menéndez said.
Breakfast food was also provided which included scrambled eggs, fruit and orange juice along with some other options.
“The food was delicious. I liked it and it is a nice touch,” Maldonado said.
Brandy Quevedo, a junior biology major, said events like these are great for getting the word out there about different opportunities students have.
“Some students miss out on opportunities like the Involvement Fair so it is good to have a variety of options like this and others for students to find organizations,” Quevedo said.
