The Gay/Lesbian Union has a series of events planned this semester in an effort to eliminate ignorance and promote understanding about homosexuals.
“We want to create a positive atmosphere for gay, lesbian and bisexual students at NIU and continue to educate people on what homosexuality is all about,” said GLU co-president David Huggins, who is coordinating some of the events.
The speakers bureau is one way GLU educates the community, he said. Members participate in panel discussions on homosexuality for interested classes and organizations.
GLU will stress AIDS education this semester. The organization will hold an AIDS Walk for Life Sept. 22 at Grant Park in DeKalb. GLU also will organize an AIDS Safe Sex Awareness Week, Huggins said.
Other events planned this semester include monthly meetings and newsletters, bimonthly dances, films and other special activities, Huggins said.
GLU is conducting interviews this week for board positions, including a special interest adviser, an office manager, an SOS coordinator and co-editor for the newsletter, he said.
The next GLU meeting is slated for Wednesday in Room 506 of the Holmes Student Center at 9 p.m.
