Welfare sets objectives

Using the “Unity in Diversity” theme as the tool to provide for the overall safety and well-being of students is what Campus Welfare Adviser Greg Leathers said he hopes to do.

Recruiting representatives from different campus communities for the Campus Welfare Committee is an objective Leathers said he has.

“It’s my intention, in keeping with the Unity in Diversity theme that NIU President La Tourette and the campus is taking on, to draw together spokes people of all different types of groups throughout campus and hear each of their issues,” Leathers said.

He said he thinks the Campus Welfare Committee could be a strong voice on campus.

“As campus welfare adviser I’m tasked to help formulate membership from the student body on seven different committees,” Leathers said.

One such committee is the university Judicial Advisory Board, consisting of students, faculty and staff which Leathers said he will be sitting on along with SA President Preston Came.

Another committee Leathers said he is in charge of manning is the Judicial Hearing Board.

Board members are needed to act as jury to decide guilt or innocence and level of sanction, Leathers said.

Advocates act as defense attorneys who defend the rights of students accused of violating any rules according to the Judicial Code, he said.

Leathers is responsible for interviewing applicants.

The other committees Leathers will put together include the Campus Security Advisory Board, Drug Free Schools and Communities Act Committee, Health Services Budget Review Committee and the Room and Board Committee.
