Naive editorial

found the editorial in the July 25 issue to be very confusing and naive.

President John La Tourette officially asked new students to come here in the fall. Further, some incoming graduate students are not going to receive their assistantships as promised.

Now if I were the president, I would be yelling. Let’s not forget the late paychecks, a hiring freeze, and changes in the faculty insurance policy. Obviously, budget problems exist.

Apparently the author of the editorial does not understand that although projects for one year might get paid for, the next year another host of projects of some kind which need funding appear. Secondly, the budget cuts do not seem to strike us as hard because we are already here and most likely we will attend the classes we signed up for.

But new students may view NIU with anxiety because of a “WARNING: You might not be able to take enough classes and we want you to go somewhere else” letter.

Evidently there is a shortage somewhere.
