NIU men’s golf is set to begin its 2024 spring campaign and defend their 2023 MAC Championship title this week in Huskie sports.

MEN’S GOLF

Monday, Feb. 26: at University of Louisiana at Lafayette, all day.

NIU men’s golf kicks off its spring competition season Monday in Henderson, Nevada, at the Lake Las Vegas Invitational. The Huskies go into the tournament behind graduate student Zach Place and junior Ben Sluzas. 

The Huskies rounded out the fall with a 286.333 scoring average. Their lowest round score was 274 in the first round of the Quail Valley Collegiate Invitational. Their best placement was at the Purdue Fall Invitational, finishing eighth out of fifteen teams.

NIU baseball (2-6) dropped 3 of 4 games last weekend against reigning national champions, No. 3 Louisiana State University and Northwestern State University. The Huskies will travel to Iowa City, Iowa, to take on the University of Iowa Hawkeyes Tuesday before traveling to Cincinnati, Ohio, Friday for a four game set against the University of Cincinnati Bearcats. 

Freshman pitcher Ty Brachbill spun a gem in NIU’s only win last weekend, dealing 5.2 innings pitched while striking out eight Northwestern State batters.

Riding a three-game losing streak heading into Tuesday’s matchup with the University of Toledo Rockets (17-10, 11-3 MAC) this week for NIU men’s basketball (9-18, 3-11 MAC) gets no easier. After taking on the second place Rockets, the Huskies will face the MAC leading University of Akron Zips (20-7, 12-2 MAC) on Saturday. 

With four games remaining in the season, the Huskies rank 11th in the MAC. Sitting three games behind the Kent State University Golden Flashes for the final spot in the MAC Tournament, NIU will need a miracle to make it to Cleveland. 

GYMNASTICS

Fresh off an outright victory at Sunday’s home quad meet, NIU gymnastics (7-8-1, 1-4 MAC) hits the road once again to compete at the NC State Quad Meet in North Carolina’s state capital. The event’s four-team field includes meet host North Carolina State University (6-4, 6-0 ACC), Iowa State University (5-7, 2-2 B12) and Temple University (9-9, 1-2 AAC).

Softball (3-7) heads to Kentucky for five games after a week off, looking to right the ship after going under .500 in each of its first two tournaments of the season.

Senior catcher/outfielder Ellis Erickson leads the offensive charge, hoping to expand on her 10 hits, five doubles and home run in the first 10 games.

NIU women’s basketball (13-13, 6-8 MAC) plays its final home game of the 2023-24 season against the MAC’s first place team, the University of Toledo Rockets (21-4, 13-1 MAC). Then, the Huskies go on the road to face the University of Akron Zips (9-16, 4-10 MAC).

The Huskies sit in seventh place in the MAC with Ohio University and Miami University just one game behind.

NIU’s men’s tennis team (8-2) will be playing at home after wins against both Youngstown State University (4-5) and Xavier University (1-10). The Huskies look to continue their six match win streak at home against Southern University and the University of Nebraska this weekend at home.
