Huskie happenings fill off-season

Although school was out, the business of sports at NIU continued. Among the most noteworthy developments include:

NIU has tabbed Jeanne Fleck to become the new head women’s swimming coach. Fleck comes to DeKalb after serving as an assistant men’s and women’s coach at the University of Wyoming.

The 25-year old Fleck succeeds veteran NIU coach Mike Burt, who retired from coaching after the current season ended.

Youngstown State signed on as the tenth member of the Mid-Continent Conference. The Ohio school will begin playing a full schedule of Mid-Continent men’s basketball games during the 1992-93 season. Youngstown will, however, be eligible for conference titles in all other Mid-Con sports during the upcoming season.

Mid-Continent Conference Commissioner Jerry Ippoliti has signed a three-year pact to stay on as the league’s head man.

Ippoliti was the head football coach for five seasons (1971-75) at NIU and was NIU’s associate athletic director before taking the Mid-Continent post four years ago.

The women’s basketball program is losing two assistant coaches.

Sandy Schuster, a part-time assistant the past two seasons, took the head coaching position at Eureka College. Regina Woods, a graduate assistant for the Huskies last season, is joining the staff at the University of West Virginia as an assistant coach.

The NIU men’s basketball team’s all-time leading scorer, Donnell “D-Train” Thomas, is making a mark in his new profession: sixth man for the Youngstown Pride of the World Basketball League.

Thomas, a first-round pick in the WBL’s April draft, was averaging 11.3 points and 4.9 rebounds in the 6-4 and under league as of June 12.

Not doing as well as Thomas is record-setting Huskies quarterback Stacey Robinson.

Robinson was recently released by the NFL’s Philadelphia Eagles after they had signed Robinson as a free-agent running back in April. The former Huskie holds six NCAA records and led the nation’s quarterbacks in rushing the past two seasons.
