Expand horizon
April 30, 1991
The Unity in Diversity Steering Committee would like to extend an invitation to the entire campus to follow the directions of Unity in Diversity 1991’s theme: Stand Up, Come Out, Join In.
The year is far from over, and the committee challenges everyone to continue to participate in events for the balance of this year and to take part in the planning and implementation of the yearlong activities.
It is Northern Illinois University’s goal to take a proactive stance of appreciation for the rich diversity teeming on this campus—a diversity inclusive of race, gender, culture, religion and physical ability.
NIU proudly celebrates its cultural pluralism and has achieved national recognition by the National Association of Campus Activities for outstanding multi-cultural programming. In the past, students, staff, faculty members and administrators have contributed to the success of such programming through committee participation, fund-raising efforts, the sponsorship of activities and participation in various programs.
Some of the programs and activities have included: colloquia, seminars and workshops, concerts and plays, dances, conferences and teleconferences, contests, cultural presentations, displays and exhibitions, films, football game half-time messages, panel discussions, ethnic food festivals, open house at the administration building, religious events and ceremonies, keynote speakers, international picnics and other events too numerous to list.
Unity in diversity events are consistent with Northern Illinois University’s mission to expand the horizons of its community which includes its faculty, staff and students.
Participation in Unity in Diversity planning and activities tends to prepare participants not only to get along in today’s multi-cultural environment but to survive in the cosmopolitan world of the 21st century as well.
